We are now looking for a resident physician (ST-läkare) for the forensic medicine unit in Uppsala.

Your assignment

As a forensic physician, you work on behalf of the judicial system, primarily with death investigations and assessments of injuries to suspects and victims in various violent crimes.

In Sweden, there are six forensic medicine units. The unit in Uppsala performs approximately 750 autopsies and about 680 forensic certificates per year. A death investigation includes, in addition to autopsy with forensic chemical sampling, a review of the circumstances surrounding the death and often also a histological examination. Forensic certificates can be based solely on incoming documents in the form of patient records, interrogations, and similar, but also on physical examinations performed by forensic physicians. There is always a forensic physician on call outside office hours throughout the year.

The National Board of Forensic Medicine is responsible for the specialized training of physicians within the specialty of forensic medicine. The training follows an individual educational program and lasts for at least five years. The main part of the residency training consists of practice and theory in forensic medicine, but the training also includes law, criminalistics, and some clinical work, including clinical pathology. On-call duty in the evenings and weekends is included in the training.

Qualifications

• Swedish medical license
• Completed basic medical training or general medical service
• Driver's license B
• Excellent ability to communicate verbally and in writing in Swedish
• Good ability to communicate in English

Meritorious

• Practical experience of autopsies

The assignments can be challenging as difficult events need to be investigated to establish what has happened. Due to the nature of the work, personal qualities are therefore of great importance.

Employment

The position is a permanent full-time employment that begins with a six-month probationary period. Start date is according to agreement. Placement in Uppsala. The authority's units are located in different locations in Sweden, so travel in the service may occur. Depending on the needs of the operation, there is the possibility to enter into an individual agreement regarding remote work for part of the working time. The National Board of Forensic Medicine applies individual salary setting.

The Department of Forensic Medicine conducts approximately 5,500 forensic autopsies each year on behalf of the police and prosecutors. We also investigate suspected perpetrators and victims who have been subjected to violent crimes.
